Soroptimist International of Grass Valley needs your help to provide dresses for young girls in Africa to prevent them from being victims of human sex trafficking. We need donations of materials, people to put the dresses together, money donations to get the materials. We have two "kitting"
sessions for this season planned for October 13 and November 17 from 11-3pm at Calvary Bible Church. This project will go throughout the year. Contact us here for more information. WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT 350 DRESSES WERE MADE AND SENT TO AFRICA in January. An additional 150 were sent to Thailand and 100 to Kenya.
Outstanding Effort Award
Each year for the last 30 years, SIGV has honored a graduate from the area's middle schools who has overcome physical, emotional, educational or familial obstacles and succeeded to graduate. These inspirational youngsters are applauded for their tenacity, perseverance and hard work at a luncheon in May where they receive a certificate and gift recognizing their achievements.
Adoption of Bell Hill Academy
.
Soroptimists honor Citizens of the Month from Bell Hill Academy with a certificate and a Culture Shock Yogurt Gift Card. In addition, members organize a Christmas Boutique where students can purchase gifts for friends and family for a minimal amount. Money is donated back to the school. Some members have also participated in the reading and mentoring programs.
Soroptimist Grants
As part of the grant process this past year, SIGV supported the Diaper Project, The Hangout, NEO, Women of Worth, Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Soroptimist committees identify a need in the community and raise money at the Fair Chicken Teriyaki Booth and at A Day for Women to promote the advancement of women and children in Nevada County. In addition, money was given to a clinic in the Congo, a vision program in Kiev, and the HEART program in Africa.
Money is raised during the Fair and the Draft Horse Classic by selling our scrumptious, healthy chicken teriyaki bowls filled with rice, teriyaki chicken or orange chicken, and topped with carrots and broccoli.
